Mark your calendars for upcoming events!
- April 21 "Out of the Fiery Furnace: Jewish Americans, African Americans, and Representations of Suffering in Children's Literature" by Jodi Eichler-Levine of the UW Oshkosh Religious Studies department. Summary: Jewish Americans and African Americans-- including Jewish African Americans, since these two categories are not mutually exclusive-- have histories of suffering in America and abroad. How are these histories narrated in works for children and young adults? How are issues of memory and representations of suffering intertwined? How does suffering actually contribute to how minorities portray themselves as patriotic Americans? This talk focuses on depictions of Jews and African Americans in several contemporary works, with some nods to the history of children's literature and an emphasis on themes of suffering, memory, and the construction of American ethno-religious identities. Authors to be discussed include Julius Lester, Maurice Sendak, Sydney Taylor, and others.
will give a talk on African American and Jewish Children's Literature
- May 19 "Black Thursday Remembered: Race, Politics, and Campus Unrest in Northeast Wisconsin During the Late 1960s" by Stephen Kercher of the UW Oshkosh History department. Summary: "Black Thursday Remembered" examines the little-known history of race relations in Northeast Wisconsin by recounting the events surrounding the November 1968 black student demonstrations at Wisconsin State University-Oshkosh.

The Fellowship has over 70 members and friends who live in the Oshkosh area! Over the years, members have expressed an interest in getting together in Oshkosh and to eventually offer a service in Oshkosh. This process started in the spring of 2009, but we realize that it will take some time to fulfill our vision. Building community is essential to success, so our first step is to offer a regular time for the Oshkosh folks to get together.
This initiative is being led by four volunteers (the Oshkosh Leadership Team) and most of the work will be done by volunteers...so if you would like to get involved or have questions, please contact one of the Team members:
