Youth Ministry

Sources According to the Simpsons (6th, 7th, and 8th grade)

The young teens will have an opportunity to laugh and learn the UU Sources, or roots of our faith, along with the popular television program, The Simpsons. Episodes have been handpicked to reflect each of our Sources to encourage discussion about how each Source is evident in their everyday lives. Each lesson includes either a game or activity to enhance the lesson.

This group meets on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. or Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Senior High Youth Group

Our High School Youth Group meets every Saturday at 4:30 and is designed to provide a safe space where young people from 9th through 12th grade can come together to share fun, community-building, educational, and spiritually challenging conversation and activities. This year the Youth Group will also be studying the UU Sources. During the study of each Source, the teens will participate in an adult service, have a discussion with one of our ministers, do a service learning project, and participate in an appropriate ritual for that Source.                                                                                                dave flower-1.jpg

Special Programming: Our Whole Lives (Junior High)

In addition to our weekly gatherings, we also offer  Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Grades 8 and 9.  These sessions are led by trained facilitators and are a great supplement to the sexuality education our teens receive in the home.

Special Programming: AP Our Whole Lives (Senior High)

Our older teens can also participate in AP  Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Grades 10 - 12.  These sessions are also led by trained facilitators and expands upon the Junior High OWLS curriculum.

Special Programming: Coming of Age (This will be offered again during the 2010-2011 program year)

Coming of Age rituals have existed throughout history to mark the transition from childhood to young adulthood. In various cultures, they have included ceremonial abductions, vision quests, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other traditions designed to help youth learn about themselves and prepare for adulthood.  These rituals also give the community an opportunity to celebrate the reality of that transition.

At the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, we mark this time in our youths’ lives with a year-long Coming of Age Program when they are sophmores through seniors in high school. This program includes pairing youth with adult mentors, discussions and retreats that emphasize self-awareness and confidence-building,  service to the Fellowship and community, and a culminating affirmation ceremony in which each youth shares with the Fellowship her/his personal credo of beliefs.  This bi-annual event is a highlight for our congregation as we share the deep and thoughtful reflections of our emerging young adults.
