Youth Ministry

Popcorn Theology (6th, 7th, and 8th grade)

What is more fun than watching a movie and eating popcorn?  Could it be, learning something as you work with people your own age?  This curriculum uses some modern and classic movies to examine the principles in media.  The young people are then asked to evaluate the media and see how each principle was portrayed. We are using this curriculum in tandem with Compass Points.  This group meets on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Compass Points (6th, 7th, and 8th grade)

As the young people in this program may tell you, middle school and junior high is a difficult place to navigate.  Having a good sense of  being an authentic human being and a “compass” that leads in the right direction is the purpose of this curriculum.  We are using this curriculum in tandem with Popcorn Theology. This group meets on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:45 a.m.

Hunger and Homelessness (Senior High)

This curriculum will examine the sources of hunger and homelessness in the Fox Cities and beyond.  Part of the curriculum will be experiential work at the Emergency Shelter of the Fox Cities.  Our High School Youth Group meets every Saturday at 4:30 and is designed to provide a safe space where young people from 9th through 12th grade can come together to share fun, community-building, educational, and spiritually challenging conversation and activities.                                                                                                 dave flower-1.jpg

Special Programming: Our Whole Lives

In addition to our weekly gatherings, we also offer a six-session program of Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education for Grades 10 – 12.  These sessions are led by trained facilitators and are a great supplement to the sexuality education our youths receive in the home.

Special Programming: Coming of Age

Coming of Age rituals have existed throughout history to mark the transition from childhood to young adulthood. In various cultures, they have included ceremonial abductions, vision quests, bar and bat mitzvahs, and other traditions designed to help youth learn about themselves and prepare for adulthood.  These rituals also give the community an opportunity to celebrate the reality of that transition.

At the Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, we mark this time in our youths’ lives with a year-long Coming of Age Program when they are in ninth and tenth grade. This program includes pairing youth with adult mentors, discussions and retreats that emphasize self-awareness and confidence-building,  service to the Fellowship and community; and a culminating affirmation ceremony in which each youth shares with the Fellowship her/his personal credo of beliefs.  This bi-annual event is a highlight for our congregation as we share the deep and thoughtful reflections of our emerging young adults.
